2018-2022 Cohort Materials
The Teacher Leadership Institute began with a science and environmental literacy focus as part of Santa Cruz County Office of Education's County Science Initiative supporting all 10 districts in Santa Cruz with systemic implementation of Next Generation Science Standards. The program launched in Summer of 2018 with the first cohort of 64 teachers and 20 environmental education partners and by 2022 had connected community-based environmental education partners with 170+ teachers leaders representing 90% of school sites in county.
Training of Trainers
2021-22 was the final phase of the Teacher Leadership Institute for Science and Environmental Literacy with a Training of Trainers to support systemic implementation of TLI science lesson sequences.
Teacher Leaders developed science lesson sequences integrating outdoor learning and environmental literacy with grade level science standards. The pandemic meant many lessons were shifted to distance learning.
The structure and pedagogy was informed by the BSCS Professional Development Provider Training and focused on a shared NGSS-based learning experience, reflection and dissection of that learning in connection to the standards, and then application of our learning through the development of NGSS-based lesson sequences for testing with students. We hope the materials below will be useful to others interested in adapting elements of the program.
